Main features of the route
This round trip is wholly on surfaced roads on the eastern side of Lake Orta, over the ridge of the Upper Vergante district. The itinerary takes you to several villages on the lake and in the Vergante hills, an area of orchards and plant nurseries. The route is highly scenic, particularly around the village of Massino Visconti, which has been called “the window onto Lake Maggiore” thanks to the superb view it offers the visitor.
The route
From Omegna Town Hall go along the lakefront to the left past the hospital; at the end of the lakefront turn right and cycle along the side of Lake Orta as far as Gozzano.
Go into the town and continue straight on for Briga Novarese. At the junction turn left in the direction of Invorio; when you get to the crossroads take the direction of Invorio Superiore and continue to Colazza and Nebbiuno.
A stop at Massino Visconti is recommended, to visit the castle, see the picturesque leaning tower of the church, and enjoy the view of Lake Maggiore. Massino Visconti has been called the “window onto Lake Maggiore” thanks to its panoramic view.
Continue along Provincial Road (SP) 39 to Carpugnino, and when you get to the turnoff for Stresa go up to the left towards Vezzo and Gignese (some parts of the road are steep here). Leaving Gignese you cross the bridge over the Erno and continue all the way along the banks of the Agogna stream to Armeno. This is the start of a long, enjoyable descent, with beautiful scenery all the way to Omegna via Agrano.
